Marking requirements

The SUP Directive requires certain products to be labelled with the plastic they contain. The marking consists of a turtle symbol and an information text. In Finland, the marking obligation applies to products placed on the country’s market from 23 August 2021.

  • All single-use beverage cups made partly or entirely of plastic.
  • Packets and cartons of cigarettes with filters, as well as consumer and group packaging of filters used in tobacco products.
  • For consumer and group packaging of wet wipes (both personal care and household wipes).
  • Consumer and group packs of tampons and sanitary towels, of a surface area exceeding 10 cm2.)

Products prohibited by the SUP Directive

The SUP Directive prohibits the placing on the market of the following single-use plastic products.

  • Cotton swabs, cutlery, plates, straws, drink stirrers, and balloon sticks, except for straws and cotton swabs that fall within the scope of the Medical Devices Directives.
  • Made of expanded polystyrene
    • food packaging (containers in which the foodstuffs stored are intended to be eaten immediately from a regular container without further preparation)
    • beverage containers (including caps and lids)
    • Beverage cups (including caps and lids).
  • All products made of oxo-degradable plastic. The additives contained in oxo-degradable plastic cause the material to break down into microgranules or its chemical degradation through oxidation.
