Objectives and obligations of the SUP Directive
The aim of the EU Single Use Plastics (SUP) Directive 2019/904/EU is to reduce the environmental impact of certain SUP products, promote the circular economy and harmonise product regulation in the EU’s internal market.

SUP packaging product categories
SUP packages are divided into five different product groups.
Food container
A container or box that contains one portion that can be eaten directly from the container without cooking, boiling, or heating. The structure of the container is completely or partially rigid and contains plastic.
Flexible package or wrapper
Package of up to three litres containing one or more portions to be eaten directly from the package without further preparation.
Beverage container
Packaging of up to three litres, e.g. plastic beverage bottle (+ cap/lid) or plastic composite packaging (+ caps/lids). A plastic cap or lid alone does not make the package a SUP product.
Light weight plastic carrier bag
Bags and bags with a thickness of less than 50 microns offered by the store to consumers.
Beverage cup
Drinking container (+ cap/lid) sold

More information on labelling and prohibited products
The SUP Directive prohibits the placing on the market of certain single-use plastic products and requires certain products to be labelled with the plastic they contain.
